What do small businesses want to know about marketing?

What would you ask me if we met for coffee?

ask your marketing questionsToday I had chance to talk to local business owners at a free event organised by Business Inspired Growth.  I had a series of focused 1-2-1 meetings with twelve different businesses, ranging from therapists and designers, to a voice coach and supplier of sheds and fencing.

Business Inspired Growth has run a series of these pop-up business cafes and they are a wonderful opportunity for people to ask their business questions to a range of experts, with no strings attached.  Really.  All the advice given was on an anonymous basis and personalised to their own situation.

So faced with a twenty minute slot of my time, a free cup of coffee and an invitation to ask anything marketing-related, what did people want to know?

“Am I doing this right?”

“I’ve no idea where to start….”

“What on earth have I got to talk about?”meet me for coffee

“Why would I use Twitter, it’s just about what people had for lunch right?”

“How could I used LinkedIn to generate business?”

“Should I bother with posters these days?”

“How can I tell people I’m here?”

Conversations like these are a real eye-opener for me and a unique insight into what people actually struggle with and lack confidence in.

I am passionate about helping small businesses to grow their marketing skills and develop their creativity.  If you are stuck with how to approach a marketing plan, or how to discover the stories your business could use on social media or in PR, please get in touch.  I may have drunk enough coffee for one day, but I’m always open to invitations to meet for tea and cake!

Please comment below if you have any other topics to add to this list.  I’ll pick one as my next blog.
